today we saw a lot of art.
Dr. Westerbeck said i would be crying for modern art after 2.5 weeks of this renaissance art. I am screaming for it right now. Ok let me pause. I do appreciate the skill it takes to paint that kind of thing and that size, but frankly renaissance art does not push my buttons, in fact it kind of irritates them. It is all done for the man. And that is one thing i cannot stand. This tradition of “high art” is something i cannot stand. It just is so…of itself. Like i said, don’t get me wrong some of the artists are really go full od, and as a historian this whole city interests me in terms of the history of art, but… Its all so….yeech….

I am looking forward to the Guggenheim already, too bad we only get a few hours of modern art on this trip. /sigh….

we went to the santa maria novella church yesterday as well as the monastery of San Marco. It was kind of out of context as well because we just went to and didn’t have a class period before to like prepare ourselves. It would have made a bit more sense after the class. I guess my biggest problem with it was because it was all art that was commissioned by the church establishment. It wasn’t art for arts sake or art because the artist wanted to do it. I realize that there was not much of that happening but we give so much praise to the establishment wanting to be pretty and so much praise to the artists just wanting to be rich. In our text Vasari was pointing out that some of the artists were wanting to study other things and had been gifted with wanting to study the perspective in painting, however it wasnt what the church wanted so he had to sell out. And when he did, he was never happy, and people never liked his work as much, it brought him even more criticism because he wasnt as good as it as he was the other way.

also a note, i have not been feeling well. my stomach and sleep shed is so messed up.

more later
